Humboldt State University Department of Politics professor Noah Zerbe has won $2,500 in state-of-the-art instructional technology to continue and expand his use of electronic and online learning in the classroom.

HSU Students Generate $2K-Plus in Food Drive

Students from Humboldt State University’s Service Learning Center organized a collaborative, regional food drive this spring that raised more than $2,000 for Food for People, the Eureka food bank.

Fulbright-Hays Grant Sends Professors and Students to China

Humboldt State history professor Robert Cliver will accompany a group of local students and teachers on a four-week academic excursion to China this summer. The trip was made possible by a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects grant of nearly $73,000, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The participants will experience first-hand the everyday life of modern China, as well as study its history and language.

HSU Mathematics Department Announces Winners of 26th Annual Mu Alpha Theta Contest

This spring the Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics) Contest continued with its format that included a section of shorter problems along with a section of more challenging problems. Students worked on the examination for three hours on a Saturday morning, April 17th. As in the past there are two categories distinguishing more advanced (B category) mathematics students who have completed more than one upper division mathematics course from beginning (A Category) mathematics students who have not completed more than one upper division mathematics course. The contest was organized and judged this year by Professors Jeff Haag and Martin Flashman of the HSU Mathematics Department.

HSU Scientists Pinpoint Acute Forest Fire Threat

Humboldt State University researchers have confirmed that the prolonged invasion of coastal woodlands by sudden oak death poses an acute new forest fire threat to large portions of southern Humboldt, and Marin and Sonoma Counties.

United Indian Health Services Honors HSU

United Indian Health Services Inc. honored HSU with its Friends Are Good Medicine award at its 40th anniversary brunch and award ceremony on March 31 at the Blue Lake Hotel and Casino’s Sapphire Palace.

Students Win $75K EPA Sustainability Award

A team of Humboldt State University students from the Renewable Energy Student Union has won a $75,000 technology design award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a prototype smart-grid electrical system in Bhutan, a landlocked developing country between India and China.

HSU Garners Model U.N. Plaudits

Students in the Model United Nations program at Humboldt State University’s Department of Politics, including five from the North Coast, recently collected four Meritorious Delegation Awards for academic performance and participation in the Model United Nations of the Far West conference in San Francisco.

HSU Journalism Professor Garners State Recognition

Humboldt State Journalism Professor Marcy Burstiner was honored as outstanding instructor by the California Journalism Education Coalition (CAL-JEC) at the annual convention of the California College Media Association at Hearst Castle in San Simeon April 17. CAL-JEC members include the California Newspaper Publishers Association, the California College Media Association and the Northern California Journalism Educators Association.

HSU Scores National Service Award

For the third year running, Humboldt State University is the winner of the highest national honor that universities receive for contributions to service learning and civic engagement.

Inaugural Sociology Scholarship Awarded at HSU

Sociology graduate student Dustin Mabry is the first recipient of the $1,000 James D. Turner Sociology Scholarship for Spring 2010 at Humboldt State University, recognizing Mabry’s outstanding academic achievement. Student recipients in the Master of Arts degree program must earn at least a 3.75 grade point average, in addition to evidencing financial need.

TED Speaker to Share Origami Secrets at HSU

Robert J. Lang, an international leader in computational origami and among the world’s foremost origami artists with a repertoire of more than 500 designs, will deliver a free public lecture at Humboldt State University on Tuesday, March 9. Bolick-Floss Named to National Forum

Annie Bolick-Floss, director of Humboldt State University’s Career Center and Service-Learning Programs, is among eight civic and community engagement leaders from California Campus Compact (CCC) institutions who will attend a one-of-kind professional development institute in July titled Diving Deep: Campus Compact’s Institute for Experienced Civic and Community Engagement Practitioners.

Humboldt State University Fisheries Biology Professor David Hankin is among the recipients of a three-year, $720,000 California Ocean Protection Council award, administered by California Sea Grant, to explore the connections between ocean climate and the survival and abundance of the state’s Chinook salmon.

Social Work Professor Wins Native American Training Grant

Professor Michael Yellow Bird of Humboldt State University’s Department of Social Work has received a $7,500 grant from the Humboldt/Del Norte P-16 Council for a training project to close the achievement gap and create a college-going culture for grades 9-12 Native American students at the Klamath River Early College of the Redwoods.
