Students in the Model United Nations program at Humboldt State University’s Department of Politics, including five from the North Coast, recently collected four Meritorious Delegation Awards for academic performance and participation in the Model United Nations of the Far West conference in San Francisco.

Humboldt State Journalism Professor Marcy Burstiner was honored as outstanding instructor by the California Journalism Education Coalition (CAL-JEC) at the annual convention of the California College Media Association at Hearst Castle in San Simeon April 17. CAL-JEC members include the California Newspaper Publishers Association, the California College Media Association and the Northern California Journalism Educators Association.

Wildlife students at Humboldt State have a unique opportunity to earn extra credit while participating in cutting-edge research. All they have to do is find and report river otters they see when spending time on the region’s beautiful coastline and scenic rivers. And students aren’t the only ones encouraged to participate.

On Nov. 13, a 30-member contingent of HSU Logging Sports competitors traveled to Swanton Ranch, part of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus, for the annual logging sports competition. The HSU team was well prepared for competition and had broken into seven teams of mixed competitors.

Professor Jeff Black, from the Department of Wildlife, is among 12 new fellows recently honored by the California Academy of Sciences.

_“Fenced round with snow, the headland of all rivers, where the mountains are high and the land is pure.”_ Spoken by an anonymous Tibet poet centuries ago, these evocative words inspired nine HSU undergraduate students as they explored and documented the geography of western China and Tibet. A presentation highlighting their work will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gist Hall 218.

Humboldt State University Mathematics Professor Phyllis Chinn is the winner of the 20th Louise Hay Award for Contributions to Mathematics Education from the Association for Women in Mathematics, Fairfax, Va.

With three participating faculty members, Humboldt State University is ranked third among Master’s level institutions for the number of faculty it sends to the Fulbright Scholar program. Additionally, HSU’s two student participants earned the university its No. 17 ranking for the number of students who take part in the program.

Monterey – Thursday, November 12th - Pesticide Watch Education Fund hosts an evening reception and discussion of health and the environment at the Portola Hotel & Spa. Guests will be introduced to the groundbreaking work of Sheila and Steven Steinberg, professors from Humboldt State University who developed the first “Pesticide Atlas” for Monterey County, which maps pesticide use data provided by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation 2005 database.
