Inaugural Sociology Scholarship Awarded at HSU

Sociology graduate student Dustin Mabry is the first recipient of the $1,000 James D. Turner Sociology Scholarship for Spring 2010 at Humboldt State University, recognizing Mabry’s outstanding academic achievement. Student recipients in the Master of Arts degree program must earn at least a 3.75 grade point average, in addition to evidencing financial need.

TED Speaker to Share Origami Secrets at HSU

Robert J. Lang, an international leader in computational origami and among the world’s foremost origami artists with a repertoire of more than 500 designs, will deliver a free public lecture at Humboldt State University on Tuesday, March 9. The 2008 "TED Conference":http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/robert_lang_folds_way_new_origami.html speaker will address the links between Japanese paper-folding and the solution of modern scientific and engineering problems.

Bolick-Floss Named to National Forum

Humboldt State University Fisheries Biology Professor David Hankin is among the recipients of a three-year, $720,000 California Ocean Protection Council award, administered by California Sea Grant, to explore the connections between ocean climate and the survival and abundance of the state’s Chinook salmon.

Social Work Professor Wins Native American Training Grant

Professor Michael Yellow Bird of Humboldt State University’s Department of Social Work has received a $7,500 grant from the Humboldt/Del Norte P-16 Council for a training project to close the achievement gap and create a college-going culture for grades 9-12 Native American students at the Klamath River Early College of the Redwoods.

HSU Donates Food for the Local Community

Citizens Lend a Hand with Otter Research

Wildlife students at Humboldt State have a unique opportunity to earn extra credit while participating in cutting-edge research. All they have to do is find and report river otters they see when spending time on the region’s beautiful coastline and scenic rivers. And students aren’t the only ones encouraged to participate.

HSU Logging Sports Scores Big at Annual Cal Poly Competition

On Nov. 13, a 30-member contingent of HSU Logging Sports competitors traveled to Swanton Ranch, part of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus, for the annual logging sports competition. The HSU team was well prepared for competition and had broken into seven teams of mixed competitors.

Great Rivers and Mountains of Tibet

_“Fenced round with snow, the headland of all rivers, where the mountains are high and the land is pure.”_ Spoken by an anonymous Tibet poet centuries ago, these evocative words inspired nine HSU undergraduate students as they explored and documented the geography of western China and Tibet. A presentation highlighting their work will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gist Hall 218.

Scientists to Present Findings and Offer Critique of Pesticide Use

Monterey – Thursday, November 12th - Pesticide Watch Education Fund hosts an evening reception and discussion of health and the environment at the Portola Hotel & Spa. Guests will be introduced to the groundbreaking work of Sheila and Steven Steinberg, professors from Humboldt State University who developed the first “Pesticide Atlas” for Monterey County, which maps pesticide use data provided by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation 2005 database.

Student Named CSU Hearst Scholar

Humboldt State student Phi Nguyen has received the 2009/10 William R. Hearst/CSU Trustee’s Award for Outstanding Achievement, an honor bestowed by the California State University system to students on each of its 23 campuses. Nguyen has also been named the Ali C.
