The HSU Jazz Orchestra begins with a suite of compositions by jazz bassist, pianist, band leader and composer, the legendary Charles Mingus. His long career stretched from the 1940s into the 1970s. “These are social-political pieces from the 1950s,” said Jazz Orchestra director Shao Way Wu. “They showcase his unique approach and his highly personalized sound.”

A record 609,000 prospective students have applied for admission to the California State University, up 28 percent from last year. The HSU Natural History Museum opens its doors for a interactive workshop in physical science for children ages 7 to 14 years. Chemistry and Physics Discovery Day is on Saturday, Dec. 12. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with exhibits on both chemistry and physics during the four hours.

A cult classic by HSU alumnus Trey Spruance brings star power to the HSU Percussion Ensemble portion of the annual percussion concert in the Van Duzer Theatre on Saturday Dec. 5.

Humboldt State University’s Humboldt Earthquake Education Center, in coordination with the Redwood Coast Tsunami Group, has produced a new edition of the preparedness handbook _Living on Shaky Ground_, which will soon update northern California residents on how to survive the kind of devastation wreaked five years ago when an Indian Ocean tsunami killed at least 230,000 people in 11 countries. It was the worst recorded tsunami ever.
Humboldt State University received more than $3.5 million from almost 8,300 donors in the last fiscal year. Also, the value of gifts from parents shot up 76 percent from the previous year.
On Nov. 13, a 30-member contingent of HSU Logging Sports competitors traveled to Swanton Ranch, part of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus, for the annual logging sports competition. The HSU team was well prepared for competition and had broken into seven teams of mixed competitors.
The North Coast Wind Ensemble begins its second year with a concert of festive orchestral music and wind band classics at Fulkerson Hall on Saturday, Nov. 21.
