In response to Governor Schwarzenegger's signing today of an executive order directing state agencies as of August 1 to reinstate three furlough days per month for employees until a new budget is passed, California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed reiterated that CSU employees will not be subject to furloughs.

The California State University Board of Trustees today voted to raise student fees by 5 percent for undergraduates and graduate and professional programs. The State University Fee will be $4,230 for full-time undergraduate students in fall 2010, a $204 increase over last year.
Carl Leland (Lee) Barlow was born August 30, 1913 in Tucumcari, New Mexico and passed away on June 15 in Eureka, Calif., at the age of 96. Lee had always planned to become a medical doctor but received many awards and a scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. He received a Masters Degree at the University of Iowa. Lee married Kathryn Coates in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy and became the director of the Blue Jacket Choir in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Registration has begun for the HSU Marine Lab’s summer children’s program. This year’s program with the theme of Life Under the Sea will be offered for those students entering the 1st through 4th or 5th through 8th grade in the fall. There will be two sessions at the Marine Laboratory from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The first session is for those students in 1st – 4th grades and starts Monday, July 12 and ends on Friday, July 16. Session two for students in 5th – 8th grades starts Monday July 26th and ends Friday July 30th. Fee per session is $70. Pre registration is required. h3. Smith Appointed Executive Vice Chancellor for CSU System
Dr. Ephraim P. Smith, vice president for Academic Affairs at California State University, Fullerton, has been appointed as executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for the CSU system. Smith will assume his new post July 1, following the retirement of Dr. Jeronima Echeverria.
Students from Humboldt State University’s Service Learning Center organized a collaborative, regional food drive this spring that raised more than $2,000 for Food for People, the Eureka food bank.
The Humboldt State University campus will be closed for holidays and furloughs on Friday, May 28, Monday, May 31, and Tuesday, June 1. The extended, five-day closure spans Memorial Day weekend.
Humboldt State history professor Robert Cliver will accompany a group of local students and teachers on a four-week academic excursion to China this summer. The trip was made possible by a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects grant of nearly $73,000, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The participants will experience first-hand the everyday life of modern China, as well as study its history and language.

A ruling this week in a case heard in Superior Court in Alameda County will allow the California State University campuses to proceed to offer “self-supported” summer sessions rather than having to use limited state funds to provide the classes or eliminate the summer sessions.

Arcata, Calif.—The National Science Foundation has awarded Humboldt State University’s Environmental Resources Engineering Department a $700,000 grant to fund a professional Master’s degree in renewable energy and water resources.
