Summit Channels Social Justice Theory into Action

The Humboldt State community can explore social justice theory in a number of ways, whether that’s through their major or student programs. Breathing life into theory, however, can be difficult, but is an essential step in bringing about positive change. HSU’s two-day Social Justice Summit will explore the challenges of taking social justice from theory into action on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5.

Unprecedented Research on Student Food and Housing Security

California State University Chancellor Timothy P. White announced that he is extending ongoing research by professors from Humboldt State and CSU Long Beach to better understand and address the housing and food security needs of college students across the 23-campus system.

Theatre Students, Faculty Win Prestigious Kennedy Center Regional Awards

Students and faculty in HSU’s Department of Theatre, Film, & Dance won several top awards in the regional competition at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Denver. The winners include the student nominee who will represent the region in the Kennedy Center’s national awards in April.

Campus to ‘Power Down’ for Big Energy Savings

Humboldt State can save energy and reduce emissions by powering down ventilation systems, switching off office equipment and take other steps that will have cause minimal disruption and be generally unobtrusive.

Animals R Us in Jungalbook at HSU

The gym teacher—a big bear of a man—surveys his fourth and fifth graders at recess, inert and buried in smart phones and laptops on their battered schoolyard. He challenges them to enter a jungle of imagination, to take on the roles of animals and the young human foundling raised by wolves who faces life and death decisions, and the future.

Premieres and Classics with HSU Symphonic Band & Jazz Orchestra

New work—including an overture by composer and North Coast resident Michael Kibbe—plus band classics and an anniversary tribute characterize the shared concert of the HSU Symphonic Band and the Jazz Orchestra on Saturday, February 27, in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

HSU Expands Food Access With SNAP Benefits

Humboldt State is among the country’s first universities to accept Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Eligible students, faculty, and staff can now use Electronic Benefits Transfer cards to purchase food at the College Creek Marketplace.

Former HSU Student Arrested for Sexual Assault

A former Humboldt State University student was arrested for a sexual assault that occurred in December 2015 in an east campus parking lot. University Police officers arrested the student on Saturday, Feb. 13. The student was booked in the Humboldt County Jail.

Dissecting the Recovery of Endangered Species

How does a species move from “endangered” to “non-threatened” status and what are the implications of that move? Ecologist and conservation biologist Dan Doak will discuss the recovery of imperiled species in the annual Lamberson Ecology Lecture, a free public event on Friday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.

First Street Gallery Presents 'Just Cause: Donovan Clark and Jeremy Hara'

The First Street Gallery presents "Just Cause," a two-person exhibition of sculpture, paintings, drawings and mixed-media works by the artists Donovan Clark and Jeremy Hara, through March 6. Their art is a mélange of pop, conceptual, and graffiti approaches that showcase the artists' craft while gleefully playing with and subverting a variety of popular tropes within our culture.

March 2 Deadline to File for Financial Aid Priority Consideration

_The following message was provided by the Cal State Chancellor's Office._ March 2 is the priority deadline for current and prospective students to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA) or California Dream Act application to be considered for financial aid for fall 2016. HSU Library Honors Campus Authors

HSU authors and their works will be celebrated at the 2nd Annual HSU Authors Celebration and Reception on Friday, February 12, 2016, from 3-5 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the library, outside the Library Fishbowl. The event is free and open to the public.

In the first in-depth study of the virus’s impacts on bird populations, Wildlife professor emeritus T. Luke George and a group of researchers discovered the disease killed millions of birds—many more than previously thought—and had a major, and sometimes persistent, impact, on bird populations.

Humboldt State University is seeking public comment on its plan to implement more selective admissions requirements in some high-demand programs. The new requirements would be for applicants planning to enroll in Fall 2017 or after.
