Swimming Against the Current

The streams and creeks of coastal Humboldt County come alive every winter with migrating salmon, which struggle upstream to reach spawning grounds. Having survived predators and several years in the Pacific, many of these salmon will die without completing their journey. The culprit: antiquated road culverts that block their passage.

HSU Hosts Sustainability Expert

Arcata – Gil Friend, the global communications pioneer, will deliver the 15th Annual Chung-Watson Lecture in Business Ethics at Humboldt State University on Wednesday, February 27th at 3:00 p.m. in the Kate Buchanan Room, University Center. It is free and open to the public.

Power restored to campus

Full electrical power has been restored to the Humboldt State University campus following a brief outage Thursday morning, Feb. 21. All classes, offices and operations are functioning normally.

Tubman Oratorio Anchors Summit

HSU Alert Drill a Success

The Valentine’s Day test of Humboldt State University’s Emergency Alert System succeeded in transmitting 3,017 text messages to registered cell phone users, a dramatic increase from the 752 sent in the previous drill. Only 78 messages were returned as undeliverable.

For the Birds

When oil-covered birds began washing ashore following a massive oil spill in San Francisco Bay last November, wildlife responders became overwhelmed and put out a call for experienced helpers. Tamar Danufsky and three volunteers from Humboldt County headed to the scene.

Mar. 3 is FAFSA priority deadline

California State University undergraduate students who wish to receive financial aid during the 2008-09 college year should file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) now through March 3. While the FAFSA may be filed after March, those filing before the priority deadline increase the likelihood of receiving maximum consideration for all sources of aid. Students should also ask their campuses and schools to submit a verified grade point average (GPA) to the California Student Aid Commission by March 3 to be considered for a Cal Grant.

High Tech No Climate Panacea

Arcata – High technology and bio-fuels cannot by themselves reverse manmade climate change, and dramatic changes in such realms as land use by local government will be required, Humboldt State alumnus and keynote speaker Panama Bartholomy (’01) told Focus the Nation participants January 31.

HSU Boosts Financial Aid Process

Arcata – For the third year, Humboldt State University is partnering with California Cash for College, the California Student Aid Commission, Cal Grant Programs and local high schools for one-on-one assistance and online access to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) program, the initial student application to receive financial help.

Fire Quickly Contained in Music Building

Arcata — At about 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, Humboldt State University faculty members noticed smoke coming from a locked custodial closet in Old Music Building 8A, a single story structure. Faculty members pulled the fire alarm and evacuated the building. There were no injuries and the University Police Department determined that there was no broad threat to the campus as a whole.

HSU shines in food drive

Arcata— Nine hundred fifty pounds of food were collected for HSU's Holiday Food Drive as students, faculty and staff did their part to help Food For People, Humboldt County's only food bank. The food will go toward providing sustenance for the nearly 10,000 Humboldt County residents who need assistance.

For some disciplines there is simply no substitute for rigorous fieldwork. HSU’s Anthropology Department, understanding this need, is offering an intensive field program that takes students to one of the world’s premiere biological spots in Costa Rica.
