Thanksgiving, that most-autumnal of holidays, is a favorite for many: it’s an excuse to load up on cranberry sauce and green-bean casserole, a reason to try to stuff down just one more piece of pie while Uncle Tony hollers at the NFL game on the tube. Ah, traditions.

Arcata - A Chinese Universities Presidential Delegation will make a presentation to the press and the public in Humboldt State University's Kate Buchanan Room on Monday, Nov. 26, from 9:00 to 11:45 a.m.

Humboldt State kicks off International Education Week this Tuesday, Nov. 13, with Yan Huang, Visiting Professor, Dept. of World Languages and Cultures presenting “Chinese Characters and Their Stories” at 9:30 a.m. in the Goodwin Forum.

When he graduated from Humboldt State in 1970, Peter Underhill never imagined that students around the world would one day study his life’s work. Thirty-seven years later, however, Underhill’s research on the Y chromosome has shed new light on the history of human evolution.

He’s won ten Grammys, an Oscar and scores of international awards; he was the first jazz musician to field a platinum jazz album and last Friday night, legendary keyboardist, Herbie Hancock, played to a packed crowd at Humboldt State’s Van Duzer theater.

“As a sophomore, my friends told me it was too soon to start thinking about graduate school….boy were they wrong! Everyone here is telling me I am on the right track!”

Once again Humboldt State students have shown they have what it takes to make a name for themselves in rigorous academic competition.

It would be difficult for most members of our higher education community to envision 20 years ago the extent to which they would communicate electronically. The technology rich environment in which we conduct our business has no doubt provided new ways for persons with disabilities to access a college education and pursue their dreams. That same technology has also presented unintended barriers. It is therefore imperative that campus communities build capacity to create electronic accessibility for all.

Humboldt State University is joining with education institutes around the world to celebrate International Education Week on November 13 – 15. This occasion is being organized jointly by the International Resource Committee and the Global Connections Club. It will be the fifth year that ‘all things international’ at HSU have been showcased by this event.

Twenty years ago, Humboldt State students and community members started a revolution with just 21 words: “I pledge to thoroughly investigate and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job opportunity that I consider.”

With a crowd of more than 200 guests present, the Behavioral and Social Sciences building was dedicated in a ceremony on Friday, October 12. The ceremony was held in the courtyard between the two BSS structures. The HSU Calypso Band opened and closed the festivities. President Rollin C. Richmond presided.

Bob Snyder, Humboldt State University’s new second-in-command, names three overriding priorities for the Office of Academic Affairs, the division he leads in his new dual role of interim provost and vice president.

Social and environmental responsibility is the essence of Humboldt State University and the Campus Center of Appropriate Technology embodies that ethic, HSU President Rollin Richmond said at CCAT’s Grand Reopening Sept. 29.

The Center for Indian Community Development and the Native Culture’s Fund are sponsoring a free screening of KEET-TV’s “The Original Patriots,” a documentary featuring three local Native American veterans of World War II, on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Humboldt State University’s Behavioral and Social Sciences Building Forum room 162.

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery presents “4 in October: Works by Alumni Artists,” Oct. 6 through Nov. 4, continuing the gallery’s program of highlighting artists who have studied at HSU.

The current exhibit at the Humboldt State University Library showcases the World War II experience in Humboldt County. One display centers on the book “Original Patriots: Northern California Indian Veterans of World War II” by local author Chag Lowry. The book is a collection of interviews with Northern California Indian veterans. They share their experiences as well as their perspectives of being an Indian in the military during the time of the Second World War.

Perfect fall weather dawns for the long-anticipated dedication of the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center along Eureka’s waterfront. A large white sail covers the Center’s new signage and is hoisted to much fanfare marking the official dedication of the building on Wednesday, September 26th.

On Sept. 24, 2007 the Arcata Police Department received a report that a strong-arm robbery occurred on LK Wood Boulevard north of campus. At about 10:10 p.m. the victim was walking on LK Wood Boulevard near Pacific Court when a male subject approached him, threatened physical harm, and demanded that he hand over personal property. Two other males were following on foot close behind when the robbery occurred and appeared to be involved.

A record 1,056 new freshmen are enrolled at Humboldt State University for the fall semester, an 8% jump from the 981 posted a year ago. The leap in new transfer students is even higher—15%.

Arcata - Humboldt State University’s clock tower bells will ring from 10:45 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, as part of a test and drill of the University’s new emergency alert system, which will enable mass notification of the campus population.

Eureka – Humboldt State University, the City of Eureka and California’s Department of Boating and Waterways officially will introduce the $4.5 million Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center on Wednesday, September 26 at noon with the unveiling of a monument sign at the new facility, which is next door to the Adorni Center on the Eureka Waterfront.

Arcata – Officials of Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) at Humboldt State University announced today that Douglas Shaw, President of Arcata Hospital Corporation and CEO of Mad River Community Hospital, has authorized rent forgiveness for the program to remain in its former University Annex location until November 30, 2007.
