A potential revolution is unfolding on out-of-the-way logging roads. Foresters and researchers are innovating unique ways to make use of forest residues—low quality trees, tree tops, limbs, and chunks that formerly would have been left in slash piles and burned, or worse, left to rot.

It’s game on for a group of Humboldt State students who are competing against 15 other universities nationwide. The game is “Kill The Cup,” and campus culture indicates the HSU squad might be the favorite in this field.

A partnership between HSU and the Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA) is saving the campus money and reducing carbon emissions one light bulb at a time.

Where there are cars, there is pollution. And when it rains, oil and other residues left behind on roads and parking lots are swept off the surface and deposited in wastewater systems virtually untouched. Thanks to a $1.4 million grant secured by the City of Arcata in collaboration with Humboldt State and the Northern Humboldt Unified School District, environment-friendly technology is addressing that problem throughout town.

Humboldt State University will recognize Native American Day this Friday, Sept. 25. The day honors Native American cultures and contributions to the State of California.

Already recognized by the White House as a leader in preventing sexualized violence on campus, Humboldt State University is one of 27 universities in the nation to receive funding under an $8.5 million Dept. of Justice grant competition to enhance victim services and develop programs to continue addressing sexualized violence.

Gaffney, Dept. of Psychology, a researcher of social identities and influence, and Tyler Stumpf, School of Business, whose research has included hotel and tourism business management in Pacific Island countries.

The Humboldt State University Department of Mathematics welcomes Professor Federico Ardila from San Francisco State University and the University of the Andes in Colombia to deliver a lecture on the use of high-dimensional geometry to move robots efficiently from one position to another. The talk will also look at high-dimensional "spaces of possibilities". Mathematicians have studied these kinds of spaces and have developed "remote controls" to navigate them in their complexity. This talk will describe these techniques, and show their implementation. It will be accessible to a general audience, and assume no previous knowledge of the subject.

Humboldt State University has suspended the Chi Phi fraternity as it investigates possible violations of the student code of conduct. During the suspension, the fraternity will not be allowed to recruit new members or to use campus services that are available for recognized student organizations.

In this edition, we introduce Professor Melanie Michalak, Dept. of Geology, whose expertise is in tectonic geomorphology, landscape evolution and geochronology, and Professor Troy Lescher, Dept. of Theatre, Film, & Dance, who holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts from Texas Tech University.

Shayne Sines, a senior in Liberal Studies Elementary Education, is the recipient of the 2015 CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement. The HSU senior is earning a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, a major that meshes with his passion for giving back. “Some of the most rewarding moments of my life are helping others to learn, and I have found that I’m good at it,” says Sines.

Fog is as much a part of Humboldt County as the redwoods. In fact, with their unusual ability to take in water through both roots and needles, redwoods directly benefit from the mist-laden air.

Citing a broad research capability and access to unique natural environments, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Humboldt State No. 15 for public regional universities in the Western United States. HSU ranks No. 57 on the full regional ranking, which includes public and private universities. The announcement comes as the news organization publishes its annual Best College Guidebook.

Derrick Smith, the final suspect involved in a campus paintball gun shooting incident in July, has turned himself in, according to University Police.

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery presents _Young Alumni 2015_, on exhibit from Tuesday, June 30 through Sunday, September 6. The exhibition features works by recent graduates from HSU's Art Department.

Summer might be viewed as a quiet time on campus, but a quick look around reveals a hidden hub of activity. Along with the obvious ones, many behind-the-scenes projects have been completed or are underway as the fall semester begins, including an environmentally-friendly Low Impact Development system (LID) that cleans up storm run-off.
