Nearly 700 people voted in the recent Associated Student elections, or a total of 8.4 percent of the 8,210 eligible voters. Voters overwhelmingly supported Jonah Platt for A.S. president, giving Platt, who ran unopposed, a total of 611 votes.

Marie Campfield’s recent painting, “Child’s Skull, Kandahar Province,” is part of the prestigious Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Exhibition at the Museum of American Illustration in New York City in May. Campfield is the first Humboldt State student to have work accepted in the competition.

Humboldt State University’s accounting and finance program, part of the School of Business, has been endorsed by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), one of the largest and most respected associations focused exclusively on advancing the management accounting profession.

Three distinguished faculty members—Tim Bean, Jeffrey Kane, and Meredith Williams—have been selected as recipients of the 2016 McCrone Promising Faculty Scholars Award. Selected for exhibiting potential in a specific field, each faculty member will receive $1,500 to assist his or her program of creative activity, scholarship, or research. A recently completed study has found that Humboldt County’s average death rate for female breast cancer, 1990-2010, has been higher than death rates for women with breast cancer in the rest of the state, but that these differences are relatively small.

The distinguished artist George Blake (Hupa-Yurok) will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, to be conferred by the California State University and Humboldt State University. Blake was nominated by CSU Trustee Hugo N. Morales, who cited Blake’s role in the resurgence of Native California traditional cultural life since the 1970s.
