Campus Greets Record Number of Freshmen and Latino/a Students

If the hive of activity during the first week of school seems even busier than usual and the requests for directions more common, it's not your imagination. The largest incoming class of freshmen in HSU history–1,429 strong–brings the overall enrollment to 8,600 students, also a record according to preliminary figures.

The biggest freshman class in HSU’s 102-year history rolled into town last week, traveling from as far as Indonesia and as close as McKinleyville. And as they began settling in to their new home away from home, we asked them why they chose Humboldt State. Here’s what they said.

Humboldt State is getting ready to welcome back students for the Fall Semester.

$1.87 Million Award to Help Low-Income Students Complete College

Humboldt State University has received a $1.87 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to fund its Student Support Services (SSS) program, which helps low-income and first-generation students finish college. HSU will receive $373,378 each year for the next five years.

HSU Recycling About to Get More Convenient

Humboldt State is one of 37 colleges and universities across the country to receive support from the Recycling Bin Grant Program, made possible by Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and the Coca-Cola Foundation. The program awarded HSU with 50 recycling bins, which will be used to expand waste reduction efforts at outdoor events such as football games, concerts and club fairs.

Five CSU Campuses Rank Among Peace Corps’ Top Volunteer-Producing Hispanic-Serving Institution

Five California State University campuses—Chico, Fullerton, Humboldt, Long Beach and San Diego—have been ranked within the top 10 volunteer-producing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) nationwide by the Peace Corps. With 262 alumni currently serving around the world, the CSU continues to make a global impact as a leader in producing graduates who are committed to community service and serving others.

New Cultural Academic Centers Expand Student Support

HSU students will soon have access to two new Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence, where they’ll create community, build on their academic achievement, and affirm their identities as students of color.

HSU Fit Program Reaches Out to Children With Disabilities

Making the biggest possible splash in the Humboldt State pool was the goal of Bradley Carr, an 18-year-old enjoying a Friday night session of HSU Fit. But the larger objective for Bradley and 25 other children participating this spring has a longer-lasting ripple effect.

HSU Class of 2015 adds 1,500 to Alumni List

Humboldt State held its commencement Saturday, May 16, in Redwood Bowl, with three ceremonies honoring graduates of the colleges of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences, Professional Studies, and Natural Resources & Sciences. A total of 1,500 degree candidates crossed the stage to be presented diplomas and congratulated by first-year Humboldt State President Lisa Rossbacher.
