Way-finding Wedded to Nature and Culture

Humboldt State University is unveiling student-created interpretive signage for the new way-finding kiosks that dot the campus. The purpose is to acquaint students and visitors with the Redwood Coast's natural and cultural heritage and with how HSU's students are "Learning to Make a Difference" in the world around them.

53 Oiled Birds Rescued, Treated at HSU

The Marine Wildlife Care Facility on the Humboldt State University campus was activated Wednesday, November 22 to handle the care and stabilization of birds from Humboldt Bay that were oiled as a result of what official from the California Department of Fish and Game’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) is calling an oil spill.

David Korten to Give Lecture at HSU

The Humboldt State University School of Business, in connection with International Education Week, is hosting the internationally known writer and lecturer David C. Korten on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Kate Buchanan Room, University Center.

Service Learning in the Spotlight

At Humboldt State –perhaps it's something in the misty air -- students seem to simultaneously catch the bug for student leadership, civic-mindedness, and community outreach. Example: the Youth Educational Services House -- better known as the YES House -- tucked away in the northern corner of campus. Every semester nearly 200 college students find their way there hoping to volunteer with one of its many community-serving programs.

HSU Prof Confirms World's Tallest Tree

Dr. Stephen Sillett, Professor and Kenneth L. Fisher Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology at Humboldt State University, recently measured and verified that Hyperion—a 379.1-foot tall redwood tree, is truly the world's tallest living tree. Hyperion is the largest of three redwoods discovered this summer, which eclipse the previous world record holder, a 370.5-foot tall redwood dubbed Stratosphere Giant.

Half Million Awarded for Scholarships

Scientific Bird Cam Put on Castle Rock

The mission was called "Burrow Nesting Nocturnal Seabird." After careful, cooperative planning by the US Coast Guard, US Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, US Geological Survey, and Humboldt State University, this mission -- installing a breakthrough video-camera system for public and scientific viewing of the state's second largest colony of breeding seabirds, found on Castle Rock near Crescent City, California -- was accomplished on February 23.

HSU Noted for Waste-Reduction Efforts

On Wednesday, April 19, Humboldt County's Environmental Health Division recognized the waste reduction efforts of several local people and organizations, including both Humboldt State University President Rollin Richmond and the Campus Recycling Program's ROSE, by honoring them with Waste Reduction Awards.

Hackett Publishes New Edition of Book
