HSU Geology Chair Leads Reconnaissance Trip to New Zealand

Geology Department Chair Mark Hemphill-Haley departed on Sunday Nov. 20 for a ten-day reconnaissance of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck New Zealand’s South Island on Nov. 13. Professor Hemphill-Haley will be leading a Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association team to investigate surface faulting produced by the quake.

Mirror Image Symmetry from Different Viewpoints

Professor Erica Flapan will discuss mirror image symmetry in life, mathematics, and chemistry in the 68th Harry S. Kieval Lecture on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m., in Founders Hall Room 118. Flapan’s talk is free, will be accessible to the general audience and assumes no previous knowledge of the subject.

Humboldt State University Press Celebrates First Year Anniversary with Third Printing of Kamome

Humboldt State University Press launched its first publication on November 5, 2015, with the bilingual Japanese-English children’s book The Extraordinary Voyage of Kamome: A Tsunami Boat Comes Home. In its first year, the wildly successful book has gone through two printings with a third to be released this month. Before the end of the year, a Japanese–Spanish version of the book will be released, and more translations are in the works.

A Differing View on Evolution: Changes at the Macro Level

Two new books from the University of Chicago Press, featuring the work of an HSU Geology Professor, are looking to integrate ideas that support a nuanced view of the theory of evolution and in doing so provide a more complete understanding of how life has evolved on Earth.

[Updated] Vehicle Hits Campus Entryway Sign

Monday, Oct. 31 update: HSU Facilities Management is estimating repair costs to the entryway sign at Sunset Ave. and LK Wood Blvd. between $7,000 and $10,000 and could take up to three months to complete. Temporary repairs will be in place as soon as possible. Full repairs will include an extensive reapplication of the stucco finish, which can potentially be hindered by Humboldt's rainy season.

The Steering and Self-Study Committee, with help from individuals across campus, is drafting sections of the report throughout this semester.
