When Shareen McFall learned about an effort to create a bilingual newspaper, her sense of Humboldt State’s changing campus culture and that of the community at large ignited a passion. The Humboldt State Journalism & Mass Communications student felt strongly that a communications void existed, and was excited to help.

One of the outcomes of education is acquiring knowledge that can make a difference in the world, a concept well illustrated in Rosamel Benavides-Garb’s Spanish 308S class. From helping non-English speaking parents confer with their children’s teachers to translating Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations, the class’s hands-on component has clear value.

College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University are offering a 1 unit class to coincide with the International Latino Film Festival happening in the spring 2015 semester. The festival will be held on March 3, 4 and 5 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Minor Theatre in Arcata. There will be two pre and post festival workshops for students registered in the class.

The Minor Theatre and HSU Theatre will celebrate a historic event for Humboldt State University and the city of Arcata: a Double Centennial.

HSU’s Reese Bullen Gallery presents Book of Lies, a project by conceptual artist Eugenia P. Butler (1947-2008) with works by 76 contributing artists. Conceived as a global conversation about truth and lies, Book of Lies is a book that is more than a book, a work of art made of other works of art that invites us into the intimate world of its creators, while considering universal questions of identity, reality, and existence. The exhibit opens on Thursday, Oct. 23 with a free, public reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and runs through Nov. 20.

Tony Lapiz doesn’t look in from the outside, especially when that means complaining without taking action. Instead, he gets involved, and has become a driving force behind HSU’s student activism opportunities.

The Goudi’ni Native American Art Gallery at Humboldt State University invites the community to view mixed-media art in its latest exhibit, “Natalie Ball: Solidifying the Past with the Present.” The exhibit opens with a reception for the artist on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and runs through Oct. 18.

HSU Music faculty members perform in their annual Welcome Concert to celebrate the new school year 5 p.m. Saturday, September 6 in Fulkerson Recital Hall. The planned program includes jazz, percussion, original compositions and a tango ballet as well as pieces by Bach, Brahms and Dvorak and will be followed by a reception in the Music Lobby.
