Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery presents _All or Nothing_, an exhibition of paintings, mixed media works and videos by artist Ana Teresa Fernández on display April 1 to May 17. The gallery will present a selection of performance-based paintings and videos including two new works made for this exhibition.

Opportunities to view indigenous peoples through the eyes of indigenous photographers are rare and recent. On display at the Goudi’ni Gallery through March 13, “Our People, Our Land, Our Images” presents the works of three generations of indigenous photographers from the North America, South America, the Middle East, and New Zealand. They include newly discovered, nineteenth-century trailblazers, well-established contemporary practitioners, and emerging photographers from the next generation.

Humboldt State professors in collaboration with colleagues from College of the Redwoods are highlighting Latin America's African heritage with the 17th annual International Latino Film Festival, scheduled for 3-5 p.m., March 3, at Arcata’s Minor Theatre. Events take place each night from 6 to 10:20 p.m., and feature a film screening in Spanish with English subtitles followed by a discussion in English. The event is open to the public and admission is $5 per film. The festival is free to students enrolled in SPAN/ HIST/ ES 396 and SPAN 99A courses.

HSU Music’s spring semester Welcome Concert goes big, as a total of 16 faculty, staff and friends perform music from Bach to Gershwin, Schubert to Miles Davis, including a dozen players combining on the playful “Carnival of the Animals,” on Saturday, February 7 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

When Shareen McFall learned about an effort to create a bilingual newspaper, her sense of Humboldt State’s changing campus culture and that of the community at large ignited a passion. The Humboldt State Journalism & Mass Communications student felt strongly that a communications void existed, and was excited to help.

One of the outcomes of education is acquiring knowledge that can make a difference in the world, a concept well illustrated in Rosamel Benavides-Garb’s Spanish 308S class. From helping non-English speaking parents confer with their children’s teachers to translating Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations, the class’s hands-on component has clear value.

College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University are offering a 1 unit class to coincide with the International Latino Film Festival happening in the spring 2015 semester. The festival will be held on March 3, 4 and 5 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Minor Theatre in Arcata. There will be two pre and post festival workshops for students registered in the class.

HSU’s Reese Bullen Gallery presents Book of Lies, a project by conceptual artist Eugenia P. Butler (1947-2008) with works by 76 contributing artists. Conceived as a global conversation about truth and lies, Book of Lies is a book that is more than a book, a work of art made of other works of art that invites us into the intimate world of its creators, while considering universal questions of identity, reality, and existence. The exhibit opens on Thursday, Oct. 23 with a free, public reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and runs through Nov. 20.

Humboldt State University’s 2013-14 Excellence in Teaching Award winner, Maral Attallah, presents “The Stories We (Don’t) Tell: Re-writing Collective Memory and Identity.” The talk is free and open to the public, and takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 2, in the Van Duzer Theatre on the HSU Campus.
