A Look Back at Fall 2013

Fall 2013 was a big semester for Humboldt State: the university kicked-off its Centennial year with an unforgettable celebration on the Plaza; HSU students, faculty and staff made their mark both on- and off-campus and the university continued to expand its academic offerings with new programs and majors in a variety of disciplines. From student achievements to university milestones, here are some of the highlights of Fall 2013.

Fall Art & Artisans Fair Features Student Artwork

Humboldt State University’s Reese Bullen Gallery presents its annual Fall Art and Artisans Fair in the Reese Bullen Gallery on Wednesday, December 11, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday, December 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Double Play of Jazz at HSU

HSU turns a double play of jazz with ensemble concerts on Thursday, December 12 and Saturday, December 14 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

Ceramic Invitational at First Street Gallery

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents "A Ceramic Invitational Exhibition," featuring artwork by nine North Coast artists through December 23rd. The show is a fundraiser for the gallery, which features a broad selection of affordable, high quality ceramic pieces and paintings suitable for holiday gifts.

Glass, Color and Light: Paintings by Demetri Mitsanas

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents "Glass, Color, and Light," a solo exhibition by painter and Art Professor Emeritus Demetri Mitsanas on display through December 23rd. The exhibition features mixed media paintings of colorful still lifes that depict colored glassware and explore the relationship between light, color, and the transparent nature of glass.

Oops! Can’t Miss Percussion and Calypso Concert at HSU

HSU Percussion Ensemble presents the North Coast premiere of “Oops,” the World Percussion Group pounds out exciting rhythms of the Brazilian Samba and the HSU Calypso Band does their Caribbean thing on Saturday, December 7 in the Van Duzer Theatre.

China-Tibet Field Studies Program Celebrates 12th Year

“Fenced round with snow, the headland of all rivers, where the mountains are high and the land is pure." Though spoken by an anonymous Tibetan poet centuries ago, these words continue to inspire HSU undergraduate students to explore and document the geography of the Tibetan Plateau.

A Full Night of Jazz Combos

It’s a full night of small group classic jazz and originals as two different sets of HSU Jazz Combos perform in separate shows on Saturday November 16 at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the Fulkerson Recital Hall at HSU.

HSU Named Top School for Fulbright Scholars

Humboldt State has been named a top school for Fulbright scholars by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Three HSU faculty members received awards in 2013-14, making Humboldt State a leading producer of Fulbright scholars among U.S. master’s institutions.

Book of the Year Author to Read Selections from "Fup" at HSU/CR

College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University’s 2013/14 Book of the Year author Jim Dodge will read selections from his novel _Fup_ twice in November. Dodge will read first at HSU on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Goodwin Forum. And at CR, he will read in the New Theater on Friday, Nov. 15 at 10:00 a.m. A book signing will follow both readings which are free and open to the public.

From Prisons to Education, Dialogue on Race Evaluates Justice

Poet and hip hop artist Tim’m West headlines the 15th annual Campus Dialogue on Race with his keynote address, “Deconstructing Dis/ease: The Body as a politicized site for healing self and community,” on Monday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. in the Gist Hall Theatre.
