Humboldt State University wildlife students and staff are among the volunteers assisting with the care of waste-contaminated Brown Pelicans at the Bird Ally X/Humboldt Wildlife Care Center in Arcata.

California State University Considers Budget Alternatives

_The following was provided by the CSU Chancellor's Office._ With the state budget for 2012-13 now signed, the California State University Board of Trustees discussed budget options for the system at its regularly scheduled board meeting today. The final budget relies on the successful passage of the Governor's tax measure in November. University officials laid out the difficult budget choices if voters don't approve the measure and the CSU faces an additional $250 million mid-year "trigger" cut. Options include strategies to reduce payroll costs, a "triggered" mid-year tuition fee increase, enrollment reductions, and other ideas are all part of the contingencies being considered.

Practice Fire Drill July 18 at HSU Campus

The City of Arcata Fire Department will conduct a test drill at Jolly Giant Commons and the College Creek Apartments at Humboldt State University on Wednesday, July 18, from 7-9 p.m. All adjoining roads are slated to remain open during the exercise.

Singh to Chair HSU’s Growing School of Business

John Y. Lee, Dean of Humboldt State University’s College of Professional Studies, has announced the appointment of Hari Singh to be chair of the School of Business, succeeding Economics Professor Steve Hackett who served as interim chair.

Chancellor Reed Outlines Governor’s Final Budget Actions

California State University Board of Trustees Begins Search for Next Chancellor

_The following was issued by the CSU Chancellor's Office._ California State University Board Chair Bob Linscheid today announced the appointment of seven trustee members to serve on the Special Committee for the Selection of the Chancellor. The Special Committee, chaired by Trustee Bill Hauck, will hold its first meeting on June 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Chancellor's Office in Long Beach to receive input from CSU stakeholders and the public. The committee will meet in closed session following the public forum to discuss additional issues related to the search.

HSU Names New College Readiness Chief

Rose Sita Francia, an administrative, agriculture and nutrition specialist who was most recently an instructor at Mendocino College in Ukiah, has been named coordinator of Humboldt State University’s Early Assessment Program, succeeding Robert Sizoo.

Registration Open for HSU’s Marine Sciences Summer Youth Program

Registration is now open for the 2012 Marine Sciences Summer Program. The two-session program is an opportunity for young children aged 6 to 12 years old to learn about the coastal environment through fun and exciting activities. The first session runs July 9 through 13 and the second session runs July 16 through 20, and participants may pick and choose the days they wish to attend. Each day runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and participants meet at the Humboldt State Marine Lab at 570 Ewing Street, Trinidad California 95570. Cost is $10 per day or $40 for the whole week.

Jacks win first-ever National Rowing Championship

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — After both races in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. II Rowing Championships were completed, there wasn't a dry eye in the Humboldt State party as tears of joy fell for the Jacks' first-ever National Championship.

HSU Bookstore Gets Makeover

The Humboldt State University bookstore is getting a facelift. Slated for a June 22 completion, the remodeling will include new flooring, upgraded display cases and an improved layout.

EPA Launches Stormwater Management Design Competition for Students

The EPA has launched a new design competition called the Campus RainWorks Challenge to encourage student teams on college and university campuses across the country to develop innovative approaches to stormwater management. The competition will help raise awareness of green design and planning approaches at colleges and universities, and train the next generation of landscape architects, planners and engineers in green infrastructure principles and design.
