Arcata – The Trinidad Atmospheric Station atop Trinidad Head, operated by Humboldt State University’s College of Natural Resources and Sciences in conjunction with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, is joining a global monitoring program to reduce environmental risks and buttress capabilities to predict climate, weather and air quality.

It’s hard not to notice Humboldt State’s latest renewable energy project. The top of the Old Music Building has been outfitted with an array of 60 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels quietly pumping out clean energy.

ARCATA—The latest edition of _Living on Shaky Ground: How To Survive Earthquakes and Tsunamis in Northern California_ is now available at the Earthquake and Tsunami exhibit at the Humboldt County Fair, currently underway through Aug. 23, in Ferndale, Calif.

Humboldt State University will be forced to close its Natural History Museum permanently by the end of August. The closure is due to this year’s severe and unprecedented state budget cuts to the California State University system.

Students and faculty from the Forestry and Wildland Resources Department at Humboldt State traveled to the 32nd annual meeting of the Council on Forest Engineering (COFE), which took place June 15-18, 2009 in Lake Tahoe.

Registration has begun for the HSU Marine Lab’s summer children’s program. This year the program with the theme of Maritime Explorations, will be offered for those students entering the 7th or 8th grade in the fall.

Arcata – Humboldt State University’s Department of Forestry and Wildland Resources awarded more than $33,000 in scholarships at its recent 11th annual spring banquet, which drew approximately 100 people, including students, faculty and scholarship donors.

Arcata – Humboldt State University’s Schatz Energy Research Center will partner with the Redwood Coast Energy Authority and Pacific Gas & Electric Company in a $200,000 project financed by the California Energy Commission to conduct engineering and economic studies in support of homegrown renewable energy in Humboldt County.

The student-led Humboldt Energy Independence Fund has granted $75,000 for a Green Campus Program proposal to upgrade the Redwood Bowl stadium lighting at Humboldt State University and slash electricity consumption and light spillage.

Arcata — Humboldt State University recently received a $308,598 grant from the national Joint Fire Science Program to provide forestland managers with comprehensive, up-to-date techniques for reducing wildland fuels in the western United States.

Arcata – Richard Engel, Senior Research Engineer at Humboldt State University’s Schatz Energy Research Center and an HSU alumnus (’88), has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and develop curriculum at Universidad Don Bosco in El Salvador during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Humboldt State University’s Logging Sports Club racked up eight victories, four second places and seven third places in contests at the 2009 Association of Western Forestry Clubs Conclave, which was held for the first time in tandem with the Redwood Region Logging Conference, March 19-21, at Redwood Acres Fairgrounds. "When I came to Humboldt people kept saying, 'You'll like our fire table.' I was thinking, 'What the heck is the fire table?' says Professor Morgan Varner, a fire scientist at HSU. "So, when I came into the Wildland Fire Lab and they lowered the hood I thought, 'Oh, wow, this is perfect!'"

Arcata – The state senate has confirmed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s nomination of Humboldt State University alum Del Walters (’77) to be director of California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

Lisa Perry, the Recruiter for the College of Natural Resources and Sciences was awarded the Roy Derek Berridge Memorial Award by the Sierra Cascade Logging Conference (SCLC) in Redding on Feb. 12, 2008.

The Sierra cascade Logging Conference hosted their annual Logging Sports Competition and Demonstration, which included Humboldt State, Cal poly, Cal Berkley, Modesto Junior College, and Central Oregon Community College.
