Humboldt State Hosts Native American Studies Scholar Oct. 25

Humboldt State University’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Native American Studies and the Seventh Generation Fund will host Crow Creek Sioux scholar and poet Elizabeth Cook-Lynn on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Native American Forum adjoining the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building. She will deliver a lecture titled "The Colonial Relationship between the U.S. and Native Nations." The event is free and open to the public.

Visiting Writers Series: Oct. 24

Four acclaimed children and young adult authors will speak about their work and answer questions about their success as writers at 5 p.m. October 24 in the Library Fishbowl as part of HSU's Visiting Writers Series.

University Prepares for Campus-Wide Fire Drills

The Humboldt State Police Department and Emergency Management Program will host a series of campus wide fire drills Oct. 15-26. The annual drills meet the university’s building evacuation requirements. In case of a real or practiced fire alarm, students, faculty and staff must evacuate to the designated rally point outside of their building. Consult the list below for a list of upcoming fire drills and their corresponding rally points.

Geography Student Wins Poster Competition

Emanuel Delgado, a senior majoring in geography, won a prestigious award at the 75th Association of Pacific Coast Geographers Meeting in Olympia, Wash. His poster, "Wetlands Loss of the Mad River Slough, 1870-2001," captured first prize in a competition that included undergraduate and graduate students from 11 western states.

Registration Drive Gets Students Set for Nov. Election

Associated Students hosts a voter registration drive on Thursday, Oct. 18 in the South Lounge of the University Center. From noon until 2 p.m. students are encouraged to stop by the lounge, grab some free pizza, register to vote if they haven’t done so already, and learn about the candidates and initiatives that will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Ecologist Warns of Cannabis-Linked Toxic Threats

Humboldt State alumnus and wildlife disease ecologist Mourad Gabriel will assess the threats to wildlife and the food chain posed by rodenticides and acutely toxic pesticides when he discusses the mounting risks of dismantled marijuana grows in a lecture on Monday, Oct. 29. He will speak at 5:30 p.m. in the Native American Forum adjoining HSU’s Behavioral & Social Sciences Building.

Indigenous Peoples Week: Oct. 8-12

Humboldt State University’s annual Indigenous Peoples Week, Oct. 8-12, will be anchored by Marilyn Vann, President of the Descendants of Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes Association and President of African Indians of the Five Civilized Tribes Foundation, and by Carolyn Dunn, Native American poet, playwright and musician.

Trustees Appoint Timothy P. White as Seventh CSU Chancellor
