Cal State Trustees Adopt Budget Contingency Plans

_The following was provided by the Cal State Chancellor's Office._ The California State University Board of Trustees today adopted budget contingency measures based on the outcome of Proposition 30 on the November 6 ballot. The board voted 11 to 3 to raise tuition fees by $150 a semester or 5 percent if the Governor’s tax initiative fails and a $250 million “trigger” budget cut to the CSU goes into effect. Alternatively, the board also voted to roll back the 9.1 percent tuition fee increase already in effect for fall if voters approve the tax measure. Faculty trustee Bernadette Cheyne, student trustee Jillian Ruddell and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson voted against the resolutions.

Chancellor's Office Outlines Impact of Pension Reform on CSU Employees

_The following was provided by the CSU Chancellor's Office._ TO: All CSU Employees FROM: Gail Brooks, Vice Chancellor, Human Resources RE: Public Employee Pension Reform Act of 2012 The Public Employee Pension Reform Act of 2012 was signed by the governor today and will become law on January 1, 2013. As you can imagine, there are many complexities to this legislation and we are diligently working with CalPERS on the interpretation of the bill (AB 340) as it pertains to CSU employees. We understand there are many questions regarding the impact of this bill and will provide you with information as quickly as possible. Listed below are some highlights of AB 340.

HSU Communication Professor Co-Edits Book on Food Rhetoric

Michael S. Bruner, a professor in Humboldt State’s Department of Communication, has co-edited a collection of essays entitled “The Rhetoric of Food: Discourse, Materiality and Power” published by Routledge, an international academic publishing house.

Safety Workshops Get You Ready for ‘Preparedness Month’

September is National Preparedness Month and Humboldt State University is offering a number of free workshops for students, staff, and faculty to help participants become better prepared and informed. Disaster preparedness experts stress that, while getting prepared can be overwhelming, the goal is to take small steps each month. One suggestion is to start where you stand, look around, and ask yourself ‘what can I do to make myself and my family safe?’
