HSU Conducts Emergency Test

Humboldt State University conducted a test of its Emergency Alert-Information System. The campus clock tower bells will rang continuously until 11:00 a.m. Cell phones are buzzing with simulated text messages. Bright red Test Today signs are posted around campus and KHSU-FM 90.5 is airing announcements about the drill. Further information is available at 826-INFO.

Student Death Ruled Accidental

Arcata – No evidence of assault has been found in connection with the July 30 death of Humboldt State senior Nghiep Tuan Huynh, 31, of Westminster, Calif., and Humboldt State University Police Department investigators announced Oct. 1 that Huynh’s death was accidental, following a meeting with the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office.

HSU to Test New Emergency Alert System Oct. 2

Arcata, CA - Humboldt State University will conduct a test of its Emergency Alert-Information System on Thursday, October 2, from 10:45 until 11:00 a.m. The clocktower bells in the Quad will chime for the full 15 minutes. Registered cell phones will buzz with simulated text messages and bright red “Test Today” signs will be posted prominently across campus. Kinesiology & Athletics Dedication

Humboldt State will host a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the campus’s new Kinesiology & Athletics Building on Friday, Oct. 3 at 3:30 p.m.

California Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi will host a listening session in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building on Friday, Oct. 3, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

UPD Seeks Leads In Pipe Bomb Hoax

Arcata - The University Police Department has issued an appeal to the public to share any information concerning the Sept. 23 campus bomb hoax by dialing UPD at (707) 826-5555 or submitting an anonymous email to hsupd@humboldt.edu. Anyone who knows of a possible suspect or who may have seen a person or persons in possession of a device like the one pictured here is asked to contact police immediately.

Budget Restrains CSU Enrollment

The new state budget provides the California State University system with essentially the same level of state support as last year. The final CSU budget consists of $2.97 billion from the state General Fund and $1.5 billion from student fee revenue. The budget is $215 million below CSU’s operational needs for 2008-09, according to the inflation and enrollment growth calculations by the Governor’s Department of Finance.

Record International Enrollment at HSU

Arcata - Humboldt State University has achieved record enrollment of 99 international students this fall and now has in its sights enlarging the International Programs Office into a full-blown International Resource Center, which would be a clearinghouse for all international programs and services for students and faculty within 10 years.

Students Eye $100,000 for Energy Efforts

Arcata - The student-financed Humboldt Energy Independence Fund (HEIF) will award $100,000 this semester for student-designed energy conservation, generation or education projects. A request for proposals (RFP) is posted on the HEIF website and the HEIF Committee hosted a brainstorm kickoff on Thursday, Sept. 18 in the South Lounge, University Center, to spur student collaboration and proposals.

Green Wheels Brings Car-Free Day to Campus

If Green Wheels ruled the world, B Street would become a public space with green space for people to hang out, walk, and ride their bikes and boards. On Thursday Sept. 25 Green Wheels will have their wish granted for one day.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, the Fifteenth Annual Day of Caring will kick off at Humboldt State University’s Art Quad at 8 a.m. HSU volunteers will join volunteers from the community to take part in this inspiring day of service. Hands-on projects for Day of Caring include dune restoration, emergency food box preparation, community gardening, native plant habitat restoration, painting, and organizing at various community agencies.

New Kinesiology & Athletics Complex Opens

Students in the dance studio can peer out a bank of expansive windows to a redwood forest; students, staff and faculty can swim laps in an airy, light-filled space; and local sports fans can yell themselves silly from their stadium-style seat in the expanded gymnasium.

Nursing Award Honors Blood Bank

Arcata - Local retiree Ken Hoard is gleeful when he says, “I was given a second chance on life.” About three years ago, he underwent triple bypass surgery at St. Joseph Hospital. “It turned out very successfully,” he says. He felt tremendous gratitude for the nurses and technicians. “I’m a real fan of nurses.”

Cleary Named Interim KHSU Chief

Arcata – Humboldt State Vice President of Advancement Rob Gunsalus has named Patrick Cleary, President of Lost Coast Communications, interim general manager of the University’s radio station, KHSU-FM, with immediate effect.

Hydrogen Fuel Station Ribbon-Cutting

Arcata - Humboldt State University and the Schatz Energy Research Center will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 11:00 a.m. for the new Hydrogen Fueling Station that produces and dispenses clean hydrogen fuel for a hydrogen-powered Toyota Prius.

HSU Pilgrim Completes 64-Day Journey to Campus

Seth Powell walked for nearly two months along the Californian coast bearing only his backpack. His mission was to travel roughly 1,000 miles on foot to reach Humboldt State University in time for the first day of class. On July 26, nearly a month ahead of schedule, he arrived at his destination. "After 64 days I have made it to the town of Arcata, my new hood! My last day of walking was a long one, I clocked in 21 miles, walking from the farm in Loleta to the grassy lawn of Humboldt State University," writes Powell on his blog, http://mindfulroots.blogspot.com/.
