SLAM Fest Gears Up for Green Living

When it comes to making sustainable living fun, no one can top Humboldt State. For 14 years HSU has been hosting the Sustainable Living Arts and Music Festival, or SLAM Fest, and it keeps getting better.

Outstanding Student Nods Include Arcata Grad

Arcata – Dedicated to “Students Who Make a Difference,” the 71 nominees for this year’s Humboldt State University Outstanding Student Awards include Ranjan Hatch of Arcata, who was recently named a 2009-2010 Fulbright Scholar to teach English, math and science in Malaysia.

New Club Boosts African School

A new Associated Students club at Humboldt State University has collected 137 hand tools, a large toolbox and a full complement of drill bits for students at the University of Livingstonia in the Republic of Malawi, a nation of 14 million people in southern Africa who are among the world’s poorest.

Natural History Museum Seeks Artists

The HSU Natural History Museum is looking for artists interested helping the museum by decorating a three-legged stool. Deborah Clasquin 1957-2009

A classical pianist known for her powerful performances and sensitive artistry, Deborah Clasquin, a Professor of Music and senior member of the keyboard faculty at Humboldt State University died in Arcata on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at age 52. Deborah remained sweet and energetic despite a furious battle against cancer diagnosed in October, 2007.

LAIE, Hawaii —Brigham Young University Hawaii’s men’s basketball games in the NCAA II West Regional Tournament will be carried live on BYU Television the school announced today. The Seasiders, champions of the Pacific West Conference, will host a four-team sub-regional on Friday and Saturday and will face seventh-seeded Humboldt State (20-11) in the opening round on Friday at 7:30 pm in the Cannon Activities Center on the BYU–Hawaii campus.

Humboldt State University’s Klamath Watershed Institute, a think tank devoted to Klamath Basin preservation, has inaugurated an official newsletter, The Klamath Current. Dr. Jack A. Shaffer 1929-2009

July 15, 1929-January 28, 2009 Jack was born in the small town of Monticello, New York, to a close and loving family who immigrated from Russia. He and his older brother, Stanley grew up in a world of swimming holes, winter sledding, lox and bagels, and pranks such as hoisting school chums up the flag pole. In the late 1940s he attended the University of Wisconsin which opened his eyes to the wonder and excitement of learning. There he decided to become a psychologist and also met his future wife, Judy Grossman. They married in 1952 and went on to do graduate work at Ohio State University where Jack received his PhD. in Clinical Psychology. In 1958 they moved to Arcata where Jack taught Psychology at Humboldt State University until his retirement in 1995.
