Humboldt State University is encouraging all students to complete and return 2010 Census forms they are receiving by mail in preparation for National Census Day on Thursday, April 1. Students can return the short, 10-question form with a postage paid envelope included in the federal mailing.

_The following update was provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office._ The California State University Board of Trustees today adopted an "early start" policy to help students be better prepared in mathematics and English when they enter the CSU as incoming freshmen. Beginning in their senior year of high school, students will learn from their results on the Early Assessment Program about whether they are "CSU ready" in math and English. This information will help them choose from a variety of options to help them to become proficient in these subjects, and allow them to start immediately toward getting ready to start as CSU freshmen.

Lori Dengler, chair of Humboldt State University’s Department of Geology, will lead a reconnaissance effort to Chile March 25 to April 4 to evaluate the impacts of the recent earthquake and tsunami and improve readiness along the Redwood Coast and the Pacific Northwest.

The Arcata Police Department informed campus officials at mid-afternoon Friday, March 5, that it had arrested Timothy Ryan Dossey, a student at Humboldt State University.

The Relight Redwood Bowl project, funded by a $75,000 grant from Humboldt Energy Independence Fund and carried out by the Green Campus Program, is now completed and operational. The project reduces the number of light poles on the track and football field from eight to four, and reduces the number of light bulbs used from 96 to 60.

For the week of March 14, otherwise known as Spring Break, 13 student volunteers, 3 student directors and 1 faculty advisor will eschew the usual vacation stomping grounds and head, instead, for Sacramento, where they will feed and build houses for the homeless.

Math students are getting some extra help with their homework this semester thanks to added hours and another location for Math Tutoring Lab.

Following a one-year review of the challenges facing Humboldt State University, a special campus panel has recommended a series of initiatives to strengthen the institution.

Humboldt State University’s Department of Geology will present a community forum, “The Week the Earth Trembled,” on Monday, February 8, at 5 p.m. in the Kate Buchanan Room, weighing the impact of and lessons learned from the January 9 and 13 earthquakes on the North Coast and in Haiti.
