John Lee, Dean of the School of Education and Movement Studies at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, WA, has been named Dean of Humboldt State's College of Professional Studies, succeeding Interim Dean Nancy Hurlbut effective July 1.

HSU Urges Students to Fill Out Census Form

Humboldt State University is encouraging all students to complete and return 2010 Census forms they are receiving by mail in preparation for National Census Day on Thursday, April 1. Students can return the short, 10-question form with a postage paid envelope included in the federal mailing.

Calstate ‘Early Start’ Aims to Help Students Prepare Before College

_The following update was provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office._ The California State University Board of Trustees today adopted an "early start" policy to help students be better prepared in mathematics and English when they enter the CSU as incoming freshmen. Beginning in their senior year of high school, students will learn from their results on the Early Assessment Program about whether they are "CSU ready" in math and English. This information will help them choose from a variety of options to help them to become proficient in these subjects, and allow them to start immediately toward getting ready to start as CSU freshmen.

The California State University Employee Update

_The following update was provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office._ The CSU Board of Trustees has adopted an "early start" initiative to help students be better prepared in mathematics and English when they enter the CSU as incoming freshmen. Students will learn at the beginning of their senior year of high school whether their results on the Early Assessment Program test make them "CSU ready" in math and English. Students not “CSU ready” can then choose from various options to help them to become proficient.

Dengler Leads Chile Reconnaissance Team

Lori Dengler, chair of Humboldt State University’s Department of Geology, will lead a reconnaissance effort to Chile March 25 to April 4 to evaluate the impacts of the recent earthquake and tsunami and improve readiness along the Redwood Coast and the Pacific Northwest.

Disability Awareness Film Series March 23-24

A two-part film and discussion series highlighting disability awareness will be held at Humboldt State University on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 23 – 24. The two films have both won awards from Superfest, the world's longest-running juried international disability film festival.

The Arcata Police Department informed campus officials at mid-afternoon Friday, March 5, that it had arrested Timothy Ryan Dossey, a student at Humboldt State University.

Students Relight HSU’s Redwood Bowl

The Relight Redwood Bowl project, funded by a $75,000 grant from Humboldt Energy Independence Fund and carried out by the Green Campus Program, is now completed and operational. The project reduces the number of light poles on the track and football field from eight to four, and reduces the number of light bulbs used from 96 to 60.

Alternative Spring Break has Students Giving Back to Community

For the week of March 14, otherwise known as Spring Break, 13 student volunteers, 3 student directors and 1 faculty advisor will eschew the usual vacation stomping grounds and head, instead, for Sacramento, where they will feed and build houses for the homeless.

Natural History Museum to Finish Closure

Humboldt State University’s Natural History Museum, which has been open only to school groups since it closed to the public last August, will close entirely after the end of the current school year. School trips planned for this spring will not be affected.

UPD Follows Leads in Weekend Assault

Arcata - Humboldt State University Police are actively following leads in a physical assault over the weekend that resulted in two 19-year-old male resident students being briefly hospitalized.

Campus Reform Ideas Getting Reviewed

Humboldt State's Expanded University Executive Committee recently met about a proposed series of campus reform proposals, and has forwarded the proposals to campus governance groups. The groups - Academic Senate, Associated Students, Staff Council and the University Executive Committee - have been asked for feedback by March 9.
