_The following update was provided by the CSU Chancellor's Office._ The state’s Master Plan remains a viable framework for California’s public higher education system, according to CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, but the state needs to renew its investment in higher education.

Humboldt State consistently attracts top performing students who value its strong academics. But for a number of years, it has had comparatively high and frustrating attrition rates among sophomores compared to other campuses in the California State University system. What’s behind the “sophomore slump”?

Humboldt State University has closed Fall 2010 applications for freshmen and transfers after strong demand from prospective students during the priority application period. The cutoff marks a big change from prior years, when the campus accepted applications through February or even later.

Humboldt State University and Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca have renewed their long-standing academic partnership, extending it to 2014.

A record 609,000 prospective students have applied for admission to the California State University, up 28 percent from last year. The largest increase came from community college transfer students whose applications increased 87 percent over last year with a total 195,113 applicants. First-time freshmen applications were up 12 percent with just over 412,000 submissions.

The HSU Natural History Museum opens its doors for a interactive workshop in physical science for children ages 7 to 14 years. Chemistry and Physics Discovery Day is on Saturday, Dec. 12. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with exhibits on both chemistry and physics during the four hours.

Humboldt State University’s Humboldt Earthquake Education Center, in coordination with the Redwood Coast Tsunami Group, has produced a new edition of the preparedness handbook _Living on Shaky Ground_, which will soon update northern California residents on how to survive the kind of devastation wreaked five years ago when an Indian Ocean tsunami killed at least 230,000 people in 11 countries. It was the worst recorded tsunami ever.

Humboldt State University received more than $3.5 million from almost 8,300 donors in the last fiscal year. Also, the value of gifts from parents shot up 76 percent from the previous year.

Student & Business Services Building employees will collect holiday donations of clothing from the campus and community through Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The Service Learning Center is excited to invite the entire HSU campus to participate in a Holiday Food Drive taking place through Monday, Dec. 7.

Humboldt State University is offering two more no-cost H1N1 vaccination clinics on Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the University Center South Lounge, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Jolly Giant Commons, second floor. Vaccinations will be administered by a nurse.

A memorial celebration of the life and work of Professor M. Wayne Knight will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. in HSU’s Reese Bullen Gallery.

Humboldt State University’s Department of Religious Studies, teamed with the Center for Indian Community Development (CICD) and faculty from multiple disciplines, will host a three-day Hiroshima and genocide awareness forum November 12-14, based on a new book about the first atomic bombing by Father Eric Freed, director of HSU’s Newman Center and a lecturer in the department.

Students who may never have dreamed of studying the sciences will get the chance thanks to an $892,000 grant awarded to Humboldt State by the National Science Foundation. It’s for recruitment and training of under-represented minorities.

The Human Integration Project Class involves a multidisciplinary study of growth, creativity, unity, and integration. Students will study cults, schools, social leaders, and other dominant parties who fail in theory and in practice to define the full human potential. This potential includes the integration of human brain functions, languages, senses, intelligences, and human beings in the social group, so that no faculty, sense, talent, or person gets denied or ignored.

Humboldt State University’s Department of Social Work has secured $100,600 for a pilot project that will set Del Norte County child welfare staff on the road to a bachelor’s degree in social work while working full time.
