HSU Leads Rangeland Student Recruitment Effort

Humboldt State University’s Department of Rangeland Resources and Wildland Soils is leading a federally-funded partnership to attract more youth nationwide to high-demand jobs in rangeland ecology.

Faculty and Staff Spring Blood Drive Kicks off Feb. 4

The Northern California Community Blood Bank is partnering with Humboldt State for a spring blood drive aimed at HSU faculty and staff. Starting Monday Feb. 4, the BloodMobile will be parked outside of the Student Business Services building from noon to 5 p.m. the first and third Monday of the month.

M.A. in Education Goes Online

Humboldt State is now offering an online master’s degree in education. The deadline to apply for Fall 2013 classes is Feb. 1.

Florida Tech Uses SERC Technology

Hydrogen experiment kits created by Humboldt State’s Schatz Energy Research Center are now being used by chemistry students at the Florida Institute of Technology.

Golden States of Grace: Prayers of the Disinherited

Geographer Investigates Marijuana Price Distribution

HSU geographer Monica Stephens presents “Data Shadows of the Underground Economy,” in the latest installment of the Humboldt Interdisciplinary Institute for Marijuana Research speaker series. The talk takes place on Tuesday, January 29, in the Native Forum (Behavioral and Social Sciences Building, Rm. 162) from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Oceanography Student Conducts Wave Research

Vanessa Crandell (’13) has been fascinated by the Earth for as long as she can remember. In kindergarten, she’d fill her backpack with rocks from the playground and bring them home after school. One of her earliest memories was taking a class field trip to a volcano in the second grade. “It was my first introduction to plate tectonics,” she recalls.

Campus Safety: How to Respond to an Active Shooter

The Humboldt State University Police Department’s Emergency Management Program has released guidelines on how to prepare for and respond to an active shooter. Although active shooter situations are rare and law prohibits the carrying of guns and weapons on campus, it is important that faculty, students and staff to be ready for any kind of emergency.

Starting Feb. 4, Humboldt State will join campuses around the United States and Canada for RecycleMania, a friendly competition to promote waste reduction activities at college and university campuses.

Forum Set to Gather Input on the North Coast’s Marine Protected Areas

Humboldt State University is hosting an open forum to gather input regarding priorities and concerns for the upcoming Marine Protected Area (MPA) Baseline Monitoring work on the North Coast. The forum is free and open to the public and will be held at the Caspar Community Center, on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. An RSVP is requested.

Health Care Expert Talks Patient Empowerment

e-Patient Dave is the keynote speaker at an Aligning Forces Humboldt community dinner to talk to patients about how partnering with physicians can lead to better care. The talk takes place Thursday, Jan. 24 at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center in Eureka (921 Waterfront Drive). Dinner will be served at 5pm. The event is free and requires an RSVP.

Brown’s 2013-14 proposed budget released this week seeks $125.1 million in new state funding for the CSU, and also reinstates the $125 million that was cut from last year's budget and was due to be reimbursed with voters’ approval of Proposition 30.

_The following was provided by the California State University Chancellor's Office._ Governor Brown today released his 2013-2014 state budget proposal that signals a renewed investment in higher education with the addition of $125.1 million in state funding for the California State University. The Governor's budget also reinstates $125 million that was cut from last year's budget and was due to be reimbursed in this year's budget following the successful passage of Proposition 30.
