The Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT), Humboldt State’s demonstration home for sustainable living, recently sent former co-director, Jeffrey Steuben to accept its award for Best Practices in Student Sustainability Program for the California State University (CSU).

Arcata – The Humboldt State University Police Department has received official notification from the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office that HSU senior Nghiep Tuan Huynh, 31, of Westminster died on July 30 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, where he had been hospitalized since suffering unexplained injuries July 27.

Rural Policy Unit Finds Big Health Care Shortfall

Arcata — Nearly half of the Redwood Coast's uninsured residents are unable to receive needed health care, reports Humboldt State University’s California Center for Rural Policy (CCRP) in its August Research Brief. The report also notes those with Medi-Cal, California’s state run medical assistance program, are more than twice as likely to seek care in an emergency room than those with private insurance.

HSU Pilgrim on Coastal Trek

Seth Powell walks along Southern California’s coast bearing only his backpack. His mission is to travel roughly 1,000 miles on foot to reach Humboldt State University in time for the first day of classes, Aug. 25. Each day he walks 20 miles carrying his pack in the California summer heat. So far, Powell has only ridden public transportation and accepted rides a handful of times. As long as the car was already heading north, he says, but the bulk of the journey will be on foot.

Prof. Dengler: Scholar of the Year

Dr. Lori Dengler, Professor and Chair of Humboldt State University’s Department of Geology and an international authority on tsunami and earthquake hazards and mitigation, has been named 2008 Scholar of the Year.
