The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Humboldt State University’s Upward Bound program a $1.25 million grant to continue its initiatives that help disadvantaged youths attend college.

Ogden, Utah—Only minutes into the 79-mile road race, someone in the pack moved the wrong way and about half of the 98 riders in the Division II men’s field crashed to the ground. Nate Abel’s Cervelo fork cracked. His front wheel bent like a taco. Riders scrambled to get off the pavement. Their bike jerseys were torn and blood-stained. It was a mess. “I thought I was going to stop,” said Abel, whose left eye was visibly bruised and swollen. “I squeezed my breaks, but then uh-oh.”

The California Faculty Association (CFA) walked out of negotiations with the California State University (CSU) on Saturday, May 5 after the two sides had resumed bargaining on May 3.

Humboldt State University business senior Melanie Barnett has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Business Matchmaking, a California non-profit that links small business suppliers with state and federal buyers.
The gift scholarship, made under the auspices of HSU’s School of Business, recognizes Barnett as “an outstanding HSU business student interested in entrepreneurship.” It will help her finance her participation in a business studies program this summer in Switzerland.

“It’s like taking a puzzle and seeing how many pieces can fit together to please everyone within a budget,” says Chris Bryan, a Recreation senior in Steve Martin’s Environmental Planning Workshop class. The class is working on the master plan for Redwood Community Park and the Arcata Marsh, a document that will determine how these public spaces will be used for the next decade.
To Michael Kauffmann, a Biology graduate student and lecturer at HSU, the Klamath Mountain region is more than just a great place to hike. It’s a museum, he says, that tells the stories of over 3,500 species of plants.

California State University Vice Chancellor, Human Resources Gail Brooks has issued the following statement concerning CSU negotiations with the California Faculty Association.
For the third year in a row, Humboldt State University has been rated among the most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S. and Canada by the Princeton Review, an education services company, in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council.
HSU Cycling is once again the Division II Western Collegiate Cycling Conference Champions in road racing, and HSU Cycling's Luke Ramseth is once again the overall Division II Conference Champion. Twelve members of the HSU's cycling team raced at conference championships in Reno this weekend. The team participated in the team time trial, criterium and road race events, finishing with enough points to win the title. Ramseth returned to Arcata with a medal, special yellow championship jersey and lucite star given only to the overall conference champions. He finished in sixth place in the Men's A, 88-mile road race, in a tense finishing sprint with the main pack just seconds behind a lead breakaway of two riders from UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz.
The HSU Religious Studies Club invites the campus community to an exhibition of a precious collection of sacred relics of the Buddha and many other Buddhist masters. The relics will be on display at the Veterans Hall Memorial Building, 1425 J St., in Arcata on. An opening ceremony takes place on Friday, April 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. The display continues on Saturday, April 28, from 10 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 29, from 10 to 5 p.m.
Continuing a tradition begun in 1950, Humboldt State University honored its Outstanding Students 2011-2012 at award ceremonies Apr. 19, hosted by President Rollin Richmond, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Bob Snyder and Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Peg Blake.
