Strengthening ties between the local Latinx community and Latinx students at Humboldt State, the University is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month through October 15. A Hispanic-Serving Institution since 2013, HSU is also proud to host three bilingual publications as part of the University’s broad effort to elevate diverse and powerful voices.

The Cascadia Coastlines and Peoples Hazards Research Hub, or Cascadia CoPes Hub, will coordinate research in Pacific Northwest coastal communities between numerous academic and government organizations to inform and enable integrated hazard assessment, mitigation, and adaptation.

The Peace Corps announced the launch of Peace Corps Prep, an undergraduate certificate program, today at Humboldt State University. Scheduled to launch this November, the program will combine targeted coursework with hands-on experience, building the competencies needed for students to become Peace Corps volunteers or other intercultural fieldworkers. HSU is one of 11 new university partnerships.

For the fourth year in a row, Humboldt State University has been named a “Cool School” by the Sierra Club magazine’s annual ranking of sustainability among North America’s greenest colleges and universities.

Led by Biology Professor Amy Sprowles, HSU’s CIRM Bridges is designed to support students from diverse backgrounds committed to improving human health through stem cell research and gene therapy.

Thanks to several new eateries at Humboldt State University, students can fuel their studies with nutritious snacks and freshly prepared meals from local restaurants this semester. Humboldt State University is expanding and diversifying its seaweed research farm in Humboldt Bay to include bull kelp. With the help of HSU students, researchers aim to inform future decisions about commercial aquaculture and conservation efforts.

To foster mutual understanding and improve the local housing climate, a free community course facilitated by Humboldt State University is now open to the public for enrollment. The product of years of advocacy between HSU and community partners, the course is designed to build relationships between the University, community, landlords, and tenants.

To raise awareness about otters and support otter research, the North Coast Otters Public Art Initiative is hosting an in-person silent auction of 32 of the now-famous otter sculptures decorated by local artists on Saturday, Sept. 11, from noon to 3 p.m., followed by an online auction of the remaining 70+ otters the following week. Additionally, a public viewing of all 100+ otter sculptures will be held Friday, Sept. 10, from noon to 7 p.m.

Humboldt State University set an all-time record with 91 student-athletes being named to the 2020-21 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Academic Team. This mark eclipsed the Lumberjacks’ second-highest total by 7%, and outclassed their total from just five years ago by over 34%.

North Coast Otters Public Arts Initiative is a community “treasure hunt” tour of more than 100 sculptures painted by local artists, with an aim to celebrate life, water, and otters, support local businesses, and raise funds for student projects.
