Humboldt State is home to one of the most dominant softball programs in the country and at 9:30 on Saturday morning, February 23rd, you can catch them playing at home in Arcata — fresh off a string of victories on the road. The Lumberjacks will face off against Notre Dame de Namur in the Best Western Humboldt Bay Inn Tournament.

Smith is new football coach

Arcata — Former Western Washington University head football coach Rob Smith has been selected as the new head football coach at Humboldt State University, Dr. Steven Butler, HSU Vice President for Student Affairs announced Wednesday.

Jacks softball ranked No. 6

Arcata — Three days before the Jacks kick off their 2008 season, Humboldt State was picked No. 6 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll, released Wednesday.

Jacks put newly-acquired top standing on the line

ARCATA — Another pivotal roadtrip looms ahead for the Jacks, who head to Southern California on Thursday for two CCAA games. On Friday, Humboldt State faces Cal Poly Pomona, and on Saturday the Lumberjacks battle Cal State San Bernardino. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino up next

ARCATA — The California Collegiate Athletic Association reaches the halfway point of its season for Humboldt State following this week’s road games. The Lumberjacks take on Cal Poly Pomona in the Broncos’ Kellogg Gym on Friday, then face Cal State San Bernardino in Coussoulis Arena on Saturday. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.

Back in the East Gym, Jacks face Chico and Stanislaus

This Week’s Games: Following a road split, the Lumberjacks seek a home sweep this week when they face Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association games. First up is Friday’s 5:30 p.m. game against the Chico State Wildcats, the top end of a doubleheader that finishes with the men’s game. On Saturday, Cal State Stanislaus goes up against the Jacks in another twinbill opener set for 5:30 p.m.

Jacks hope to sell out twice this week

This Week’s Games: Familiar rivals Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus travel to Arcata this week for men’s basketball matchups with the Lumberjacks. On Friday, the Chico State Wildcats will visit for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff, and the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors will be in town for Saturday’s game at the same start time. Both games are the latter half of a doubleheader that begins with the women’s contests.

HSU women look to extend recent success

ARCATA – After a two-game winning streak, the Lumberjacks continue California Collegiate Athletic Conference games with a weekend road-trip. They begin their weekend traveling to San Francisco to take on the San Francisco State Gators, then head south to Seaside to face the Cal State University Monterey Bay Otters. The Jacks kick off the back-to-back double headers, Friday and Saturday nights, with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

Bay Area roadtrip up next for Lumberjacks

ARCATA — After splitting last week’s games, the Jacks seek a sweep this week when they travel to face San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay. Humboldt State faces off against the S.F. State Gators at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then takes on the CSUMB Otters at the same time on Saturday. Both games are the latter half of doubleheaders tipped off with the women’s contest, and both count in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings.

ARCATA — California Collegiate Athletic Conference games resume this week when the Lumberjacks first travel to face Sonoma State, then come home to take on UC San Diego. The Jacks kick off a doubleheader on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in Rohnert Park. They’re in the East Gym on Saturday, hosting UC San Diego at the same time as the top half of a twinbill that is followed by the men’s game.

CCAA schedule resumes vs. SSU, UCSD

ARCATA — Humboldt State takes its 7-2 overall record and 2-0 league mark to Rohnert Park for a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Sonoma State on Thursday. The Lumberjacks travel back to Arcata for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. game against UC San Diego in the East Gym.

New PE Facility on Track

The next several months will be devoted to installation of the roof system and installation and construction of the swimming pool at Humboldt State University’s new $42.8 million Physical Education Facility.

HSU Olympian Rejoins Fray

Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra begins duties June 1 as an assistant coach of the U.S. Women's National Team, and will serve in that role through the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. "I spent many years playing and coaching at the national level and I am excited to return to that arena," Ms. Woodstra said. "I am very appreciative of both USA Volleyball and Humboldt State for allowing me this opportunity."

HSU's vaunted Men's Basketball Team mounted a stunning comeback in the second half of the championship round with the San Bernardino Coyotes Monday evening, but lost a 68-66 squeaker in the very last second.

Defensive lineman Todd Eagle has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team for his contribution to Humboldt State football and excellence in the classroom.

Jacks 31st in Football Gazette's Top 40

This Week’s Game: Following a big win over Western Oregon on Saturday, the Lumberjacks have cracked into one organization’s NCAA Division II rankings to start the week. The Football Gazette, a publication covering football since 1986, lists the Jacks No. 31 in this week’s top 40. The poll puts them ahead of 2006 opponents Central Washington (33rd) and Western Oregon (35th). Now the Jacks put their status to another test when they take back-to-back road trips for the first time this season. Humboldt State heads to Southern California for Saturday’s game against Azusa Pacific. Kick-off in Azusa is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Business Dept Hosts Golf Tournament

The first annual HSU School of Business Golf Tournament will take place at the Baywood Golf and Country Club, in Arcata, Friday, September 22, 2006 with a "shotgun" tournament start at 1 p.m., followed by a silent auction and dinner at 6 p.m.

Jacks' basketball adds UCLA to schedule
